In UNC Wilmington’s archives, you’ll find a host of mascot illustrations and cartoons depicting their unique Seahawk mascot, including this rendition of a determined seabird in a sailor hat cruising the skies. While they’ve been the Seahawks since their founding, the university was originally Wilmington College, a junior college that largely served WWII veterans. As the college grew to university status, it officially became UNCW in 1969.
