When Coastal Carolina was trying to find a mascot that would relate them to their then-sister school, USC, the Chanticleer became a clear favorite. The Chanticleer, modeled after the rooster from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, was then a relative to the South Carolina Gamecock, until the university became an independent school in the '90s. This 1984 Chants logo is similar to the Gamecock, but has a distinction all its own.
